Sheridan remains a prisoner of Earth officials in a harsh jail on Mars. A coolly ruthless interrogator uses psyhological torture, starvation and sleep deprevation to try to coerce Sheridan into publicly pleading guilty to treason, terrorism, sabotage, murder and a whole host of false charges. Earths citizens, fed by false propoganda, must be made to believe that only by alien manipulation could one of Earths own people fight against it, and that Sheridan regrets his actions.
